Google says my business is permanently closed, but we're open

Last updated: Oct 2026

Why it matters

customers who see "Permanently closed" don't call. They go to the next name.

Why it happens

Google accepts edits suggested by the public and by its own systems. A mistaken report, a move, a long holiday, or a duplicate listing can all lead to it.

What to do

  1. Sign in to the Google account that manages your profile.
  2. Search your business name on Google. If it shows as closed, the owner tools offer an option to mark it open again. Choose it.
  3. Check your hours, address and phone at the same time. Google may have changed those too.
  4. If you can't sign in, see "I lost access to my Google Business Profile" first.

To stop it happening again

sign in once a month and look for edits Google suggests. Keep hours up to date, including holidays. Reply to reviews, so the profile looks active.

Questions owners ask

Did a competitor do this?

Possibly, but most cases are mistakes. Fix it first, then watch for repeat edits.

How long until it shows as open?

Google decides. Usually it's corrected after Google reviews the change.

Can you watch for this?

Yes. The Monthly Check looks at what customers see each month.
