When she unsubscribes from your sales, does her receipt still come?
· 2 min read · Remus Baltatu
Gmail lets customers unsubscribe from a sender in one tap. If your receipts share an address with your newsletter, they can get lost too.
It is early December. A customer opens Gmail and sees forty sale emails. She opens the list of senders, finds your shop near the top, and taps Unsubscribe. A week later she orders a gift from you. The order confirmation never shows up. She isn't sure the order went through, so she calls, or she orders the gift somewhere else.
She only wanted fewer ads.
What is changing
Since July 2025, Gmail has a "Manage subscriptions" page. It lists the senders who email a person most often, and one tap sends an unsubscribe request to that sender. The holiday season, when inboxes are fullest, is when many people use it. What happens next depends on your email tool. Some tools stop only the newsletter. Others mark the person as unsubscribed from everything sent through that account or address. And some customers simply block the address or send it to spam, which catches receipts too.
Why owners miss it
You see your newsletter and your receipts as two separate things. In her inbox they can look like one sender, with the same name and the same address. When a receipt doesn't arrive, nothing on your side looks broken. The unsubscribe count just goes up by one.
A short check
- Write down every email address that writes to customers: newsletter, order confirmations, booking confirmations, invoices, password resets.
- If the newsletter and the receipts come from the same address, ask whoever runs your email tool about sending receipts from a separate one, such as orders@ or bookings@, with a clear sender name.
- Unsubscribe a personal Gmail address from your own newsletter, then place a test order or booking. See whether the confirmation still arrives.
- Ask your email or booking vendor what an unsubscribe stops in their system: one list, or all mail to that person.
- Keep newsletters at a pace your customers expect, especially in December.
A customer who leaves your mailing list should still get the email that tells her you have her order.
