The calls and letters that start after you register a business
Business registrations are public records. Soon after, many new owners get calls, emails and official-looking letters. Some are real companies selling something; some are scams.

Common ones
- "Your Google listing will be removed / is not verified. Press 1." Google doesn't charge for a Business Profile.
- "Verify or claim your listing for a fee."
- Letters that look like a government notice offering to file a certificate or annual report for a high fee. Real state filings are done directly with the state.
- "Guaranteed first page on Google."
How to spot them
pressure, a deadline today, a fee for something free, and no clear company name.
What to do
hang up and log in to your own accounts yourself. Check any government letter on the state's own website. Never give a code sent to your phone to someone who called you.
Questions owners ask
Is it ever really Google calling?
Google rarely calls about a free listing, and never to charge you for it. When in doubt, check inside your own account.
Should I pay to be listed in directories?
Usually no. The main places are free: Google, Apple, Bing, Yelp, Facebook.
